Bhīṣma said: "The Cedi king's intention of challenging Acyuta is not his own. There is no doubt that Kṛṣṇā, lord of the universe, determined this.
भीष्म ने कहा: "अच्युत को चुनौती देने का चेदि राजा का इरादा उसका अपना नहीं है। इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि ब्रह्मांड के स्वामी कृष्ण ने ही यह निर्धारित किया था।

O Bhīmasena! What king on earth dares abuse me now, as this defiler of his lineage has done, had it not been for incitement by destiny?
हे भीमसेन! अब पृथ्वी पर कौन सा राजा मेरे साथ दुर्व्यवहार करने का साहस करेगा, जैसा कि उसके वंश के इस अपवित्र ने किया है, यदि यह नियति द्वारा उकसाया नहीं गया होता?
O mighty-armed one! It is certain that he is but a small part of Harī's energy and the greatly famous Harī wishes to reclaim it.
हे महाबाहु! यह निश्चित है कि वह हरि की ऊर्जा का एक छोटा सा हिस्सा है और अत्यधिक प्रसिद्ध हरि इसे पुनः प्राप्त करना चाहते हैं।
O tiger among the Kuru lineage! It is for this reason that the evil-minded king of Cedi roars like a tiger, without thinking about all of us."
हे कुरु वंश के व्याघ्र! यही कारण है कि सेडी का दुष्ट दिमाग वाला राजा, हम सभी के बारे में सोचे बिना, बाघ की तरह दहाड़ता है।"
Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard these words of Bhīṣma, the Cedi could not tolerate them and again spoke to Bhīṣma in anger.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: भीष्म के इन शब्दों को सुनकर, चेदि उन्हें सहन नहीं कर सके और फिर से क्रोध में भीष्म से बोले।

Śiśupāla said: "O Bhīṣma! Let our enemies possess the influence that Keśava possesses. You always arise and praise him like a bard.
शिशुपाल ने कहा: "हे भीष्म! हमारे शत्रुओं पर वह प्रभाव हो जो केशव में है। आप हमेशा खड़े रहें और एक भाट की तरह उनकी प्रशंसा करें।"

संस्तवाय मनो भीष्म परेषां रमते सदा यदि संस्तौषि राज्ञस्त्वमिमं हित्वा जनार्दनम्
O Bhīṣma! If your mind finds pleasure in praising others, then praise the real kings, leaving out Janārdana.
हे भीष्म! यदि आपके मन को दूसरों की प्रशंसा करने में आनंद मिलता है, तो जनार्दन को छोड़कर असली राजाओं की प्रशंसा करें।
Praise Dārada of Bahlika, supreme among kings. When he was born, he tore the earth asunder.
राजाओं में श्रेष्ठ बाह्लीक की दारद की प्रशंसा | जब वह पैदा हुआ तो उसने धरती को फाड़ डाला।
O Bhīṣma! Praise this Karṇa. He is the wielder of a mighty bow. He equals the thousand-eyed one in strength and is the ruler of Vaṅga and Aṅga.
हे भीष्म! इस कर्ण की स्तुति करो। वह एक शक्तिशाली धनुष का धारक है। वह ताकत में हजार आंखों वाले के बराबर है और वंग और अंग का शासक है।
O Bhīṣma! Always praise Droṇa and Drauṇi. The father and son are mahāratha-s, supreme among brāhmana-s, and worthy of praise.
हे भीष्म! सदैव द्रोण और द्रौणि की प्रशंसा करो। पिता और पुत्र महारथ हैं, ब्राह्मणों में श्रेष्ठ हैं और प्रशंसा के पात्र हैं।
O Bhīṣma! It is my view that if either of them is enraged, he can annihilate the earth, with all its mobile and immobile objects.
हे भीष्म! मेरा विचार है कि यदि उनमें से कोई भी क्रोधित हो, तो वह पृथ्वी को उसके सभी गतिशील और स्थिर वस्तुओं सहित नष्ट कर सकता है।

द्रोणस्य हि समं युद्धे न पश्यामि नराधिपम् अश्वत्थाम्नस्तथा भीष्म न चैतौ स्तोतुमिच्छसि
O Bhīṣma! I do not see a lord of men who is Droṇa's equal in battle, or that of Aśvatthāma's. Why don't you wish to praise them?
हे भीष्म! मैं युद्ध में द्रोण या अश्वत्थामा के समकक्ष कोई मनुष्य नहीं देखता। आप उनकी प्रशंसा क्यों नहीं करना चाहते?

शल्यादीनपि कस्मात्त्वं न स्तौषि वसुधाधिपान् स्तवाय यदि ते बुद्धिर्वर्तते भीष्म सर्वदा
O Bhīṣma! Since your mind is always fixed on praising, why don't you praise Śalya and the other rulers of earth?
हे भीष्म! चूँकि आपका मन हमेशा स्तुति करने में लगा रहता है, तो आप शल्य और पृथ्वी के अन्य शासकों की स्तुति क्यों नहीं करते?

O king! But what can I do if you fail to heed the old ones. You have not heard what they, knowledgeable in dharma, said in ancient times.
हे राजा! लेकिन यदि तुम पुरानी बातों पर ध्यान नहीं देते तो मैं क्या कर सकता हूँ। प्राचीन काल में धर्म के ज्ञाता वे लोग क्या कहते थे, यह तुमने नहीं सुना।

आत्मनिन्दात्मपूजा च परनिन्दा परस्तवः अनाचरितमार्याणां वृत्तमेतच्चतुर्विधम्
There are four things that must not be done—self-censure, worship of oneself, censure of others and worship of others. These are not done by those who follow proper conduct.
चार चीजें हैं जो नहीं करनी चाहिए- आत्म-निंदा, स्वयं की पूजा, दूसरों की निंदा और दूसरों की पूजा। ये उन लोगों द्वारा नहीं किये जाते जो उचित आचरण का पालन करते हैं।

O Bhīṣma! If in your continual delusion you praise Keśava out of devotion towards him, no one will approve.
हे भीष्म! यदि तुम निरंतर भ्रम में रहकर केशव के प्रति भक्तिभाव से उसकी स्तुति करो तो कोई भी इसे स्वीकार नहीं करेगा।
How can you establish the entire universe in this evil-minded protector of herds, Bhojā's servant?
तुम इस दुष्टबुद्धि पशुपालक, भोज के सेवक में संपूर्ण ब्रह्मांड को कैसे स्थापित कर सकते हो?

अथ वैषा न ते भक्तिः प्रकृतिं याति भारत मयैव कथितं पूर्वं भूलिङ्गशकुनिर्यथा
O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Or perhaps your devotion is not a natural one. Have I not mentioned the bhūliṅga bird earlier?
हे भरत वंश के वंशज! या शायद आपकी भक्ति स्वाभाविक नहीं है. क्या मैंने पहले भूलिंग पक्षी का उल्लेख नहीं किया है?
O Bhīṣma! The bhūliṅga bird lives on the other side of the Himālaya-s. What it spoke was always devoid of meaning.
हे भीष्म! भूलिंग पक्षी हिमालय के दूसरी ओर रहता है। इसमें जो भी कहा गया वह सदैव अर्थहीन था।
"Do not act out of extreme courage" was what it always said. But in folly, it always acted out of extreme courage.
"अत्यधिक साहस से कार्य न करें" यह हमेशा कहा जाता था। लेकिन मूर्खता में, इसने हमेशा अत्यधिक साहस से काम लिया।
O Bhīṣma! That foolish bird used to pick out pieces of flesh that stuck between the teeth of a feeding lion.
हे भीष्म! वह मूर्ख पक्षी भोजन कर रहे शेर के दांतों के बीच फंसे मांस के टुकड़े निकाल लेता था।

इच्छतः सा हि सिंहस्य भीष्म जीवत्यसंशयम् तद्वत्त्वमप्यधर्मज्ञ सदा वाचः प्रभाषसे
O Bhīṣma! There is no doubt that the bird's life was dependent on the lion's pleasure. You are based in what is not dharma and always speak like it.
हे भीष्म! इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं कि पक्षी का जीवन शेर की ख़ुशी पर निर्भर था। आप उस पर आधारित हैं जो धर्म नहीं है और हमेशा उसी तरह बोलते हैं।
O Bhīṣma! There is no doubt that you live at the pleasure of these lords of the earth. There is no one like you, engaged in deeds that the worlds abhor."
हे भीष्म! इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं कि तुम पृथ्वी के इन स्वामियों की प्रसन्नता पर रहते हो। आपके समान कोई भी ऐसा व्यक्ति नहीं है जो उन कार्यों में लगा हो जिनसे संसार घृणा करता है।"
Vaiśampāyana said: O king! Having heard these bitter words of the king of Cedi, Bhīṣma uttered these words, so that the king of Cedi could hear.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: हे राजा! चेदी राजा के इन कड़वे शब्दों को सुनकर भीष्म ने ये शब्द कहे, ताकि चेदी का राजा सुन सके।
"I truly live at the pleasure of these lords of the earth, I who do not consider these kings as equal to even straw."
"मैं वास्तव में पृथ्वी के इन प्रभुओं की प्रसन्नता पर रहता हूँ, मैं जो इन राजाओं को तिनके के बराबर भी नहीं समझता।"

एवमुक्ते तु भीष्मेण ततः संचुक्रुधुर्नृपाः केचिज्जहृषिरे तत्र केचिद्भीष्मं जगर्हिरे
Hearing these words of Bhīṣma, the kings became angry. Some of them trembled, and others censured Bhīṣma.
भीष्म के ये वचन सुनकर राजाओं को क्रोध आ गया। उनमें से कुछ कांप उठे और कुछ ने भीष्म की निंदा की।
On hearing Bhīṣma's words, some mighty archers exclaimed, "Though old, this Bhīṣma is insolent and sinful. He deserves no pardon.
भीष्म के शब्दों को सुनकर, कुछ शक्तिशाली धनुर्धर चिल्ला उठे, "यद्यपि बूढ़ा, यह भीष्म ढीठ और पापी है। वह किसी क्षमा के योग्य नहीं है।"
Let all the angry kings assemble together and kill the evil-minded Bhīṣma like an animal, or burn him in a fire made out of straw."
सभी क्रोधित राजा एकत्र हो जाएं और दुष्ट मन वाले भीष्म को जानवर की तरह मार डालें, या भूसे से बनी आग में जला दें।''
Hearing these words, the intelligent Bhīṣma, the grandfather of the Kuru-s, spoke thus to the lords of the earth.
इन शब्दों को सुनकर, कुरु-वंश के पितामह, बुद्धिमान भीष्म ने पृथ्वी के राजाओं से इस प्रकार बात की।
"O lords of the earth! I do not see an end to these words, since there will be more words. Therefore, all of you listen to me.
"हे पृथ्वी के प्रभुओं! मैं इन शब्दों का अंत नहीं देखता, क्योंकि और भी शब्द होंगे। इसलिए, तुम सब मेरी बात सुनो।"

पशुवद्घातनं वा मे दहनं वा कटाग्निना क्रियतां मूर्ध्नि वो न्यस्तं मयेदं सकलं पदम्
Whether you kill me like an animal or burn me in a fire made out of straw, I place this foot of mine on all your heads.
चाहे तुम मुझे जानवर की तरह मार डालो या भूसे की आग में जला दो, मैं अपना यह पैर तुम सबके सिर पर रखता हूं।
Govinda Acyuta is here. We have offered him worship. If anyone's mind propels him towards death, let him challenge in battle Mādhava,
गोविंदा अच्युत यहाँ हैं। हमने उनकी पूजा-अर्चना की है.' यदि किसी का मन उसे मृत्यु की ओर धकेलता है, तो उसे युद्ध में चुनौती देने दो माधव,
Kṛṣṇā, the wielder of the bow and the club, until he is brought down and his body merges with that of the god."
कृष्ण, धनुष और गदाधारी, जब तक उन्हें नीचे नहीं लाया जाता और उनका शरीर भगवान के शरीर में विलीन नहीं हो जाता।"
